4 Reasons Why Your Roof Is Leaking

A leaking roof is a serious issue. It could lead to severe damage and a huge repair bill. What you may not realize is that a leaky roof doesn’t happen just from an aged roof. While that’s one of the most common reasons, even newer roofs can have leaks happen. Regular roof inspections can certainly prevent it from happening, but what exactly would you be looking for? Here are four common reasons why a roof starts leaking.

1. Attic Condensation: The attic can get caught between the constant change of temperatures causing condensation. Excessive condensation could lead to the growth of mold and mildew. The first indication will be a strong musty smell in the attic.

2. Cracked Flashing: Flashing on the roof is located under the shingles on any roof joints that form a water-resistant barrier. However, if any of those pieces get a crack, water will be able to get underneath the shingles and leak into the house.

3. Broken Shingles: Shingles are pretty durable, but sometimes the weather can damage them. Cracked or missing shingles leaves your roof exposed to the elements. This gives an opening for water to get into the house.

4. Clogged Gutters: Clogged gutters are actually one of the most common issues. Now more than ever leaves will be falling and getting caught all over the place. A clogged gutter means that rainwater won’t be able to flow down to the ground. Instead, the water will either create a waterfall effect down the front or worse go back towards the house. The water will forcefully make its way into the house causing a leak.
